This weekend, Bike Auckland and the Auckland Council will hold the Pukekohe Spring Spin to help kids get active.
The Spring Spin is a free event designed to get kids physically active through biking or skating and includes activities to keep them entertained throughout the day.
Activities include a Bike TLC Zone, where people can bring their bikes to get them tuned up and have safety checks performed for free. An obstacle course is also available for riders to try out and win spot prizes on the day.
Afterwards, they are invited to blend their own smoothies with the event’s very own pedal-powered smoothie maker, and a community corner where they can meet other riders, share stories, and connect with skate enthusiasts.
Skaters can also learn new moves with Skate Nation, but there are limited skates, so it is advised to bring their own. Helmets and pads (knee, elbow, wrist) are strongly recommended.
There are two Skate Nation sessions: a kids session from 10am to 11am and a teen session from 12pm to 1pm.
The Pukekohe Spring Spin is on November 22, starting from 9am till 1pm, at 3 Roulston Street, Pukekohe, Auckland.
Sign-ups are essential and free.
Cycling safety tips
The New Zealand Transport Agency reminds all cyclists to be aware of open roads and to always watch for left-turning vehicles.
Wear bright-coloured clothing, make sure you are clearly visible, and stay predictable by riding in a straight line, using hand signals, and a bell.
Slow down when riding past parked cars on the side of the road, and when using a shared path, ring the bell before passing pedestrians to let them know you are there.
Always wear a safety-approved helmet and check your bike regularly, including brakes, tyres, chain, lights, and reflectors.
