Racking up a half century is a big deal in rugby. Similarly, as many players have discovered, so too is Reuben O’Neill.
Tonight, from 7.05pm, the Taranaki prop will play his 50th game for the Chiefs as the squad seeks to defeat the Waratahs and escape the mid-table doldrums.
“Playing my 50th game for the Gallagher Chiefs is a huge honour,” O’Neill says. “This club has given me a lot. I’m fizzed to get out there with the brothers.”
After making his Super Rugby debut with the Chiefs in 2020, O’Neill represented the Crusaders in 2023 before returning to the Hamilton-based franchise.
The game is also significant for another player who’s just kicking off his career, Chiefs coach Jono Gibbes confirms.
With Damian McKenzie out with concussion and Counties Manukau Steeler Etene Nanai-Seturo nursing a sore foot, Daniel Sinkinson is poised to make his debut off the bench.
“Daniel is a great reflection of how well our wider training group has contributed to our environment this season so far. He has been a consistent performer for us at training and for the University of Waikato Taua development side as well.”
An Easter treat, the Chiefs v Waratahs fixture in Hamilton will include a an ‘augmented reality Easter egg drop’ as eggs will appear to fall from the sky with prizes up for grabs.
“It’s nice to be home again,” adds Gibbes. “We are looking forward to playing in front of our people at FMG Stadium Waikato.”
