Tom Walsh and Imogen Ayris have won medals for New Zealand at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland.
Walsh has made athletics history, winning his fourth shot put world indoor championship, taking his tally of indoor medals to seven.
No other man has won the title more than three times.
In claiming his victory, Walsh defended his crown from Nanjing in 2025. Walsh sat inside the top three for the entire competition, with his fifth round 21.66-metre throw elevating him into the gold medal position.
No other competitor could match his best in the final round, leaving Walsh the circle to himself as the final thrower.
Walsh produced his best of the day and the season, throwing 21.82m in his final throw to emphatically win his fourth indoor crown.
He’s now equalled Valerie Adams’ total in indoor gold medals, with the two global shot-put greats standing alone in their career dominance of the indoor championship arena.
Walsh previously won gold in 2016, 2018 and 2025, silver in 2024, and bronze in 2014 and 2022.

Ayris claimed the bronze medal in the women’s pole vault at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland.
She had a clean score card up to 4.70m, with first-time clearances at all heights.
New Zealand’s Eliza McCartney also cleared 4.70m, with close attempts at 4.80m, finishing in outright sixth.
